Writing Journey

My Writing Journey at Prince Rock

 

  • ALL children will follow the writing journey and have daily support by a teacher or teaching assistant (in class and as an intervention if required)
  • ALL children, by the time they leave school, will be able to write with confidence, clarity and purpose.
  • ALL children will have access to high-quality texts which will support the development of writing and use of ambitious vocabulary that is learnt through stories, poems, songs and talk.
  • ALL children will be encouraged to write across a range of genres and develop their author’s voice.
  • ALL children will be taught to form their letters accurately and join neatly and consistently.

 

Foundation

I will form lower case and capital letters correctly.
I will spell words by identifying the sounds and then writing the corresponding grapheme.
I will write short sentences and phrases that can be read by others.

I will write words with known letter-sound correspondences using a capital letter and a full stop.

I will use interesting vocabulary that I have learnt through stories, poems, songs and talk.

Year 1

I will be able to write all 44 phonemes in a range of words.

I will be able to read and write common exception words.  

I will learn about prefixes and suffixes and include these in my writing

I will write simple sentences that make sense that can be read by myself and others

I will use a capital letter and end sentences with a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark.

I will learn to join words and clauses using and.

I will begin to use adjectives to develop my writing.

I will form upper and lower cases correctly.

I will start to join my handwriting.

I will edit and improve my writing using CUPS and ARMS.

I will use interesting vocabulary that I have learnt through stories, poems, songs and talk.

Year 2

I will continue to use my phonics knowledge to support my writing.

I will use adjectives to describe people, objects and settings

I will use some coordinating and subordinating conjunctions to extend my sentences.

I will use adverbs to describe actions

I will use the correct tense (past and present)

I will use accurate punctuation

I will use commas for lists

I will continue to learn common exception words and develop my knowledge of homophones.

I will use the possessive apostrophe.

I will join my handwriting accurately.

I will edit and improve my writing using CUPS and ARMS.

I will use ambitious vocabulary that I have learnt through stories, poems, songs and talk.

Year 3

I will use paragraphs to organise my writing

I will use simple, compound and complex sentences

I will use a range of conjunctions in my writing

I will use expanded noun phrases.

I will continue to develop my knowledge of homophones and near-homophones

I will continue to learn the year 3/4 spelling list and use them within my writing. 

I will begin to use speech marks

I will edit and improve my writing using CUPS and ARMS.

I will join my handwriting correctly, neatly and consistently in all subjects.

Year 4

I will continue to use paragraphs.

I will use a range of fronted adverbials to add interest to my writing and engage the reader.

I will use understand the conventions of speech and know how to punctuate correctly

I will continue to learn the year 3/4 spelling list and use them within my writing. 

I will use expanded noun phrases.

I will use an interesting and varied range of coordinating and subordinating conjunctions within my writing.

I will use commas to demarcate a subordinate opening or fronted adverbial.

I will edit and improve my writing using CUPS and ARMS.

I will join my handwriting correctly, neatly and consistently across all subjects.

Year 5

I will develop my understanding of audience when planning and writing independently.

I will develop my use of cohesion.

I will check my spellings using taught strategies

I will use relative clauses, modal verbs and parenthesis within my writing.

I will join my handwriting correctly, neatly and consistently

I will accurately use all previously taught punctuation

I will use commas to avoid ambiguity.

Year 6
