Glossary 

 

AfL Assessment for Learning. The on going process of assessing children’s progress so that the level of challenge and support can be adjusted to match their ability.

BfL Behaviour for Learning. Behaviour which reflects a strong desire to concentrate, listen, participate, try one’s best, work hard and learn. It includes the development of skills os initiative, independence, persistence and resilience.

CCE Child Criminal Exploitation. Occurs where an individual or group takes advantage of an imbalance of power to coerce, control, manipulate or deceive a child or young person under the age of 18.

CEO Chief Executive Officer. 

CIN Child In Need. A CIN Plan is drawn up following a Single Assessment which identifies the child as having complex needs and where a coordinated response is needed in order that the child's needs can be met.

CLA/CIC Child Looked After/Child In Care.

CME Children missing education (CME) is defined as those who are of a compulsory school age, but are either not registered at a school or else not receiving suitable education in place of a school setting.

CP Child Protection. Child protection is part of the safeguarding process. It focuses on protecting individual children identified as suffering or likely to suffer significant harm. This includes child protection procedures which detail how to respond to concerns about a child. A Child Protection Plan is made when a child is judged to be at risk of significant harm, significant harm being a level of harm that affects the health, welfare and development of a child.

CSE Child sexual exploitation (CSE) is a type of sexual abuse. When a child or young person is exploited they're given things, like gifts, drugs, money, status and affection, in exchange for performing sexual activities

EAL English as an Additional Language Refers to children whose first language(s) is/are not English and who may not yet be speaking English fluently or even at all.

EHA Early Help Assessment. Is an opportunity for parents, carers, children and practitioners to meet up, share information and to decide and plan for the best way forward in the next few weeks. EHAT- Early Help Tool which is the paperwork used to determine what support is needed. EHAR is the Early Help Assessment Review.

EYFS Early Years Foundation Stage A framework for care and education of children from birth to five years of age.

EWO Education Welfare Officer Person employed by the Local Authority, (LA), to help parents and the LA meet their statutory obligations in relation to school attendance.

G & T Gifted and Talented

FGM Female Genital mutilation . This is the partial or total removal of the external female genitalia for non-medical reasons. It is an Illegal practice in the UK. It's also illegal to take abroad a British national or permanent resident for FGM , or to help someone trying to do this.

HBV Honour Based Violence. Can be described as a collection of practices which are used to control behaviour within families or other social groups in order to protect perceived cultural and religious beliefs and/or honour.
