Reading Journey

My Reading Journey at Prince Rock

 

ALL children will be heard read every week through 1:1, guided reading or whole class reading.

ALL children, by the time they leave school, will be able to decode and read ANY word they encounter, regardless of ability.

ALL children will have access to high-quality texts which are accessible at their level of development and provide challenge

ALL children will be encouraged to read for pleasure.

 

Foundation

I will be heard read in school every week (1:1, small group or whole class)

I will know my set 1 and 2 sounds and be able to segment and blend words by the end of Foundation.

I have a phonics session once a day in a group.

I will be able to take RWI book, an enrichment book / library book home with me every day.

I will take flashcards home to help me with tricky words.

I will read every day at home.

Year 1

I will be heard read in school every week (1:1, small group or whole class)

I will know all of my set 3 and additional sounds by the end of Year 1.

I will have a phonics session once a day in a group.

I will be able to take RWI book, an enrichment book / library book home with me every day.

I will read every day at home.

I will complete the phonics screening check.

I will hear and take part in a class story at the end of the day and also share picture books during English which relate to our writing and/or topic.

I will take part in BUYB.

Year 2

I will be heard read in school every week (1:1, small group or whole class)

I will know all of my phonics sounds.

I will have help from my teacher and other adults to ensure that I am choosing suitable texts that challenge me.  

I will be able to take RWI book, an enrichment book and a library book home with me every day.

I will continue to build on my fluency and comprehension when reading.

I will read every day at home.

I will continue to read texts that are at my benchmarked level and begin REN reading if able.

I will complete my REN quizzes independently and develop my comprehension skills.

I will take part in whole class reading lessons and explore different text types and VIPERSS skills.

If I didn’t pass the phonics screen in Year 1, I will try again this year and pass after extra help and intervention.

During writing lessons, we will read, share and discuss a high-quality text linked to our topic.

At the end of the day, we will share our author study book and experience a wide range of styles, genres and authors.

I will take part in BUYB.

Year 3

I will be heard read in school every week (1:1, small group or whole class)

I will have help from my teacher and other adults to ensure that I am choosing suitable texts that challenge me.  

I will be able to take RWI book, an enrichment book / library book home with me every day.

I will continue to build on my fluency and comprehension when reading.

I will read every day at home

I will take part in quiet reading every morning to ensure I take quizzes and increase my reading word count.

I will take part in whole class reading lessons and explore different text types and VIPERSS skills

If reading is still a struggle for me, I will have precision teaching to help me learn new words and develop my reading fluency.

During writing lessons, we will read, share and discuss a high-quality text linked to our topic.

At the end of the day, we will share our author study book and experience a wide range of styles, genres and authors.

I will take part in BUYB.

Year 4

I will be heard read in school every week (1:1, small group or whole class)

I will have help from my teacher and other adults to ensure that I am choosing suitable texts that challenge me.

I will continue to build on my fluency and comprehension when reading.

I will read every day at home

I will take part in quiet reading every morning to ensure I take quizzes and increase my reading word count.

I will take part in whole class reading lessons and explore different text types and VIPERSS skills.

As a class, we will practise SATs-style questions to support us in our understanding increasingly as the year progresses. I will have reading boosters in the afternoons if I need help with specific techniques.
