Attendance and Reporting absences
A child’s attendance at school is very important and the government have set a legal requirement that all children should be at school for 96% of the time.
As a school, we have a legal requirement to complete a daily register. The school doors close at 8.50. If you arrive after that, your child will receive a late mark. If they arrive after 9.10, it will be recorded as an unauthorised absence.
Lateness
The registers will be inspected for lateness once a week by the Headteacher and letters sent to parents where appropriate.
Absences
Pupils’ absences must be reported to the school by an email, telephone call or letter or by speaking to the teacher in the playground. Parents are asked to telephone school before 10am on the day their child is sick, otherwise the admin staff will phone or text to check from 10.00am. If your child still has an unexplained absence after one week the school will speak to the Education Welfare Officer for advice.
Letter from parents requesting absence
All requests for leave of absence must be referred to the Headteacher. Please note that absence from school will only be granted in exceptional circumstances. Holidays taken in term time are not allowed. Additional information is sent out to parents and can be shared by the school office again if needed.
We are required by law to keep a register of absences and to publish those absences
which were both authorised and unauthorised by the school. For the school year 2024/2025 this was 10.9%.
End of the day 3.10pm
Children in Years R – 5 will all be 1:1 matched to an adult and are only to go with confirmed adults or siblings over 14. If someone else (other than the parent/carer and this does include siblings) is collecting your child from school, the school must be informed (verbally to the class adults, via email or by calling the school office). We will not let a child be collected by someone who we are unaware is collecting. If this is the case, we will ask the person to wait whilst we call the named contacts on Arbor.
Children in Y6 (and Y5 from the summer term) can walk home alone as long as parental permission to do so has been given.
At 3.15pm, if a child has not been collected, we will take them to the school office, sit them in the waiting area and call parents or carer. At 3.30pm, if a child has not been collected and we haven’t been able to get through to parents or carers (listed on Arbor) the child will need to be taken to After School Club. Parents will be charged for this.
Children must be collected by an adult or sibling aged 14 or over. Under exceptional circumstances, the headteacher will make decision on a case-by-case basis.
Pupils leaving during the school day
Pupils are only allowed to leave the school premises during the day if we have written or verbal communication from the parent/carer requesting to do so. Then ONLY IF THE PARENT (or his/her adult representative) COMES TO COLLECT THE CHILD from the office. On no account is a child allowed to leave the school premises unaccompanied during the school day. Normally permission should be given only for medical or dental appointments, if these cannot be arranged out of school hours. Any other requests should be referred to Headteacher.
School Organisation
The school is organised into Key Stages - Foundation, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. The classes at Prince Rock Primary School are organised into age groups which consist of:
- Foundation Stage (4-5 years)
- Key Stage One (5-7 years) – Years 1 and 2
- Key Stage Two (7-11 years) – Years 3, 4, 5 and 6
It remains a priority of the school to sustain single age year groups as we feel strongly that this best supports individual child achievement and attainment. Teaching assistants work in each year group to provide additional teaching and learning support.
Our School Day
It is important that the children arrive on time for school each morning. Children enter the school building from their designated doors. Staff will be at the door at drop off and collection should you need to speak to them briefly. It is important that children arrive on time for school each morning.
Children in Foundation, Year 1 and Year 2 are provided with free fresh fruit or vegetables each day.
Foundation
Children are met by their teachers at the Foundation gates in the morning and at the end of the school day they should be collected from the Foundation outdoor space. Children will leave via the door of the Foundation classroom. Teachers will only let the children leave once their adult arrives.
Year 1 and Year 6
The children in Year 1 go through the main door for Breakfast and After School Club which is located in the small playground. They will be collected at the end of the day from the same place. Year 6 leave through the fire escape doors next to Breakfast and After School Club. If consent has been given by a parent or carer, Y6 children are allowed to walk home.
Year 2, 3, 4 and 5
All children in year 2, 3, 4 and 5 enter school through their year group doors in the big playground. They are met by an adult who will welcome them into school. At the end of the day, the children will leave the building via their year group doors. Teachers will ensure that each child is collected.
