NSPCC Rocks 2024

February 2nd is NSPCC Number Day! As part of our commitment to make maths exciting and high profile in our school, we've decided to take part in a friendly competition involving schools in the United Kingdom. It's a 1-day competition which starts on Friday 2nd February 2023 at 07:30 GMT and ends at 19:30 GMT. It's all done online via play.ttrockstars.com.

Children can play in any gamemode with every correct answer to a multiplication or division question, earning themselves, their class and the school a point. The Times Tables Rock Stars platform will calculate the class average (the number of correct answers per pupil in the class who play during the competition hours, subject to a 60-minute limit (see below). Winning classes in the school and in the competition as a whole will be the ones with the highest average.

To support player wellbeing, there is a time limit of 60-minutes per player. In other words, each player can earn competition points for up to 60-minutes between 07:30 GMT and 19:30 GMT on Friday 3rd February. Once the player goes beyond 60-minutes of play on that day, they will still earn coins but will no longer earn points towards the competition. In the spirit of the competition, please don't play on their behalf but by all means, encourage and support them to the extent that it doesn't cause high-stress levels or impact on family plans.

Well done to the top 3 classes for the NSPCC Rocks competition...

Let's look at this week's leaderboards...

Barvember 2023

During November, Prince Rock will be taking part in a series of 'Barvember' challenges. There are 5 brand-new problems for children (and adults) to solve every day in November. The children will be challenged to solve the different problems using the bar model. They might do it as early morning work, in their maths lessons or as part of their homework! It was great to see lots of entries last year for Barvember so this year we are celebrating this through entering submitted problems into a prize raffle. If your child would like to be in with a chance to win a prize, please send completed challenges with your name and class on them to Miss Down (Maths Lead). Watch this space to find out who our winners are!

Follow the link below to view this year's challenges! It would be great if you could try some at home too.

Don't forget to check out the parent guide to bar modelling below.

Although there were lots of entries this year, there were two stand out winners who showed off their excellent determination learning muscle.

Well done to our Barvember winners!

Prince Rock are taking part in the Learning Academies Trust KS2 Battle.

Below are the are the results.

Well done to our winners who have won themselves a times tables board game pack. Throughout the LAT KS2 Battle, both children showed off their brilliant thinking and organisation learning muscles.

Maths Assembly 2023

Today, we had a fantastic assembly with Mr Doogan from City College Plymouth. To begin with, we had a go at solving a reasoning challenge as we came into the hall. This created a lot of buzz around the room and the children were keen to share their answers. After that, Mr Doogan spoke to us all about why mathematics is important as it helps people to manage their personal and social lives as well as increases opportunities for future work. Next, we went through different scenarios where we might encounter using maths during our everyday lives (money, planning events, cooking, time management, etc.) - it was great to hear how so many of us use maths in our lives every day! Finally, we thought carefully about what jobs we might like to do in the future and how those jobs need mathematics in order to be able to do them properly. It was an interesting assembly and the children had lots of fun!

Maths Workshop 2023

Some children from Year 5 & 6 were lucky enough to be invited by Mr Doogan to attend a reasoning & problem-solving code breaking workshop at school. In the session, they learnt about the history of different codes, why codes were used and how they linked to mathematics. It was fantastic to see the children apply their maths knowledge to a range of problems as well as work so well together to solve mathematical clues in order to crack the codes! They had a fantastic time and learnt lots.

STEM Visitor

In today's visitor assembly the children met Emma, an engineer, who came in to tell them all about STEM. The children learnt that STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and they were fascinated by how their learning in school could help them with getting a job in one of these jobs when they are older. In particular, it was lovely to hear the children talk about how their learning in maths could help them land their dream job in the future!  Watch this space as Prince Rock continues to inspire the world's future scientists, engineers, mathematicians and technology innovators!
