In the second 10 minutes she jogged just half that distance.
In the third 10 minutes she walked just half as far.
In the fourth 10 minutes she dawdled only half of that and so on.

Well, in theory at least, she would never have quite reached the end, but it happened that right at the end of a 10 minute stretch, exactly one metre from the finishing post, Chandrika tripped and fell forward over the line.

How long was the race to be and how long did Chandrika take doing it?

For this, you will need to draw upon conclusions, using clues, evidence and reasoning from within the text. There is a model example to an inference question on the PDF file.

Task: Answer the two questions provided. Make sure you use evidence from the text to support your thinking. Use the sentence stems to support you.

  • I think Alex is suspicious because the text says...This tells me...
  • I think/do not think that he died in an accident because... The evidence for this comes from...

Writing

In today’s lesson, you will be generating descriptive vocabulary. You will be developing your understanding of what life was like during the Victorian era and mind mapping extra vocabulary to use in our writing lessons. We will also have a specific focus on using prepositional phrases effectively.
Watch: https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/to-generate-descriptive-vocabulary-cmv62c?activity=video&step=1

There is a warm-up and interactive tasks for you to complete.

Task: You will need your mind map from the previous lesson. Use a different colour pen or pencil to add prepositional phrases to your mind map. Also, mind map descriptive vocabulary for Sherlock’s house. Please share your work from this lesson by typing it into the Word document and send it via Teams or send a photograph of your written work to year6staff@princerock.co.uk You will need to save a copy of today’s work.

Microsoft Teams review at 1:15pm

Mrs Cummings and Miss Grant are expecting you to join them again for a review on Teams. They will call you at 1:15pm, where they will discuss your learning from the morning. Perhaps you could share your favourite example of a prepositional phrase from your English work. Again, if you or your adult at home have any questions you wish to discuss in more detail, then please email year6staff@princerock.co.uk and a member of the Year Six team will get back to you.

Geography

First, complete the retrieval task. What can you remember from before half term?

Today's lesson focusses on clothing. Review the learning on the PDF file.

Task 1: Select six items of clothing from around your house (ask an adult before you take them). Ideally, choose clothes bought from different retailers. Your task is to read the care label and find which country they were manufactured in. Write this down on your sheet. What do you notice about where most of these clothes were manufactured?

Task 2: Write your thoughts about the following question. It is ethical to buy cheap clothing from poorer countries / third world countries?  Think about the three people on the slides and your own opinion. You could even ask an adult at home their thoughts.

Spanish

Use the PowerPoint to revise the simple future tense in Spanish. You will need to remember the different forms of the verb and use the –ir verb in sentences. You will also need to use other Spanish phrases to accompany it.

Task: Write the Spanish for each of the sentences you have been given on the attached worksheet.

Mrs Rapsey’s Problem of the Day: Two Clocks challenge. See attached to the answers document.

Reading

We are reading a new fiction text called 'Alex Rider Stormbreaker' written by Anthony Horowitz. The genre is a mix of 'spy fiction', 'thriller' and 'adventure fiction'. Looking at the cover can you make any predictions about what the story is about and who the target audience is? Miss Grant and Mrs Cummings will be reading the chapter during the live briefing. They will also review the key vocabulary for this week.

Task: Add the vocabulary into the appropriate sentence. There is also a dictionary task to complete. You can use Google for this if you do not have a hard-copy of a dictionary.

Writing

Over the next few weeks, we will be basing our writing on Sherlock Holmes – the famous detective. In this lesson, we will begin learning about life in Victorian London during the Victorian era. We will also begin generating descriptive vocabulary using images from this time period. It may be worthwhile to jot down some notes. Watch:https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/to-build-knowledge-of-the-historical-context-of-the-narrative-crt68r?activity=video&step=1
Task: On an A4 or A3 piece of paper, set up a mind map like the one attached to your assignment. You will need to use it to note descriptive vocabulary about Victorian London. Please keep this safe as you will need it again in subsequent lessons. Please share your work from this lesson by sending a copy/photograph of work to year6staff@princerock.co.uk

Microsoft Teams review at 1:15pm

Mrs Cummings and Miss Grant are expecting you to join them again for a review on Teams. They will call you at 1:15pm, where they will discuss your learning from the morning. What have you enjoyed? What are you looking forward to? Is there anything you found tricky? Is there anything you’d like them to explain again?

If you or your adult at home have any questions you wish to discuss in more detail, then please email year6staff@princerock.co.uk and a member of the Year Six team will get back to you.

Science

This term, we are starting a new unit of work in science: electricity. You will have last covered this topic in year four, so we are going to spend some of today recapping key knowledge you should know.

  • What a simple series electrical circuit is
  • Identifying whether or not a lamp will light in a simple series circuit, based on whether or not the lamp is part of a complete loop with a battery
  • Recognise that a switch opens and closes a circuit and associate this with whether or not a lamp lights in a simple series circuit

In school, we would typically use a range of ‘hands on’ resources, but hopefully the links provided will help you to visualise and revise the objectives above.

Task: Complete the concept map. See Miss Grant’s example to help you.

Challenge task: Find a range of electrical items in your home. How would you group these electrical devices based on where the electricity comes from?

 Times table practice

Continue to practise your times tables on TTRS. There are 30 garage games for you to complete over the course of the week.

Remember, you will need to continue with some independent reading this evening. If you have finished your book, you can request a book by contacting the school office. Miss James will happily pick one she thinks you may enjoy.

Science

Last week, you looked at how humans have changed over time and used the theory of evolution to explain these changes – learning how to make and use tools, shelter, fire and language has enabled humans to spread all over the world. You also started to look at the impact that humans have had on some species of plants and animals. In today's lesson, you will develop this further, learning about some of the impacts that humans have on life on this planet. You will also draw upon your wider learning and look at pollution, global warming, hunting and deforestation. You will learn what happened to the dodo bird and about some amazing organisations that are working hard to ensure that other species do not become extinct.

https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/what-impact-are-humans-likely-to-have-on-life-in-the-future-cnj64t

Task: there is a retrieval quiz at the beginning of this lesson, which recaps your learning from last week. Choose one of two tasks to complete.

  1. Research a conservation organisation. Follow the detailed research instructions on the Oak Academy video. Present your findings in a ‘zine’.
  2. Challenge task: Should we bring back extinct animals? Consider the key questions to support your explanation. There is also an article attached to help provide more insight.

Maths

Today’s maths session revises the efficient method of long multiplication. We use this method to multiply numbers up to four digits by a two-digit number. Always remember the ‘zero’ when multiplying the tens digit! Please watch the White Rose video clip – see attached.
Task: complete the attached sheet. Show your workings and answers on a piece of paper. If you have Word, submit your answers on the document via Teams or send a photograph of your work to year6staff@princerock.co.uk

Mrs Rapsey’s Problem of the Day: see attached.

Reading

As it is Friday, we will be using an unseen text during our reading session today. You will need to read the text, Volcanos, on pages 4 and 5. You should keep referring back to the text when answering the questions.

Task: There are a range of mixed VIPERSS questions for you to respond to. Remember to use the techniques we practise in school, including skimming and scanning, highlighting/identifying key words, deciding what type of question it is and how to answer. Always read your response back and check it answers the question. The seventh question is a ‘3 mark’ answer, so it will require a more in depth answer and at least three pieces of evidence from the text and an explanation. Please ‘hand in’ your completed task for feedback.

Writing

Today, in writing, you will be planning your biographical piece of writing. First, you will look at what an introduction is and plan your own introduction for this biographical writing. After that, you will plan the main body of the text and break the main body into four paragraphs: Early Life, School Life, Voyages and Discoveries. For each paragraph, you will refer to notes made from the previous lessons and insert opening sentences and linking sentences. Finally, you will plan a concluding paragraph.
Watch:
 https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/to-plan-a-biography-6ww62r

Task: complete the planning sheet attached.

Microsoft Teams review at 1:15pm

Mrs Cummings and Miss Grant are expecting you to join them again for a review on Teams. We will call you at 1:15pm, where we will discuss your learning from the morning. Geography

This week’s geography lesson is all about trade and how globalisation has affected it. Trade is the exchange of goods, money and services between one country and another.

Retrieval task: before the lesson begins, complete the retrieval quiz. How many did you remember? If you got them correct, remember to highlight them on your geography knowledge organiser.

Additional information about the positives and negatives of trade and how trade affects people differently is available here: https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/how-does-globalisation-affect-trade-crt64e?step=2&activity=video

Task: Reflect on the question Is trade good? Sort the cards into positives and negatives of trade. Once you have completed this task, please hand in via Teams or by email.

Assembly

Miss Brake has filmed an assembly for us to share this week.

You need to copy and paste this link into your web browser and it will take you to Microsoft Streams. Here you will be able to watch the assembly. Please do not comment on the assembly as it is being sent to all the children across the school. We hope you enjoy it!

As it is Thursday, you are being asked to answer a range of reading questions based on the VIPERSS skills. You will need to re-read the text, Chapter 2 of The Explorer, independently or to an adult. You should have a good understanding of the text as this will be the fourth – and final – time you read it this week.

Task: complete mixed VIPERRS task. We have attached the answers for self-checking, so please do not look at these beforehand. Please ‘hand in’ your completed task for feedback.

Writing

During today’s writing lesson, you will be retrieving information from a non-fiction text and you will be starting off by practising writing sentences from notes. There is an example of some notes about Charles Darwin, which can be turned into modelled sentences. In the main part of the lesson, you will recap how to collect information and choose the best way to record information that makes sense to you. Then, you will look at some non-fiction texts about Charles Darwin, focusing on the last two sections: Voyages and Discoveries.

https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/to-retrieve-information-from-a-non-fiction-text-part-2-64rkct

Task: From the information you have read, make notes under the two subheadings (Voyages and Discoveries).

Microsoft Teams review at 1:15pm

Mrs Cummings and Miss Grant are expecting you to join them again for a review on Teams. They will call you at 1:15pm, where they will discuss your learning from the morning. What have you enjoyed? Add a question or tagline highlighting the mathematics that you have seen in the image using your maths eyes.  All entries must be in the school by Monday 22nd February 2021 and there will be prizes!  Excitingly, all of the LAT schools are running the Maths Eyes competition and we will be sharing our entries with each other.

Reading

Before we begin, think back to last week’s text. Can you summarise what happened during chapter one of The Explorer by Katherine Rundell?

You will need to read the new text, the second chapter from The Explorer. We will read this chapter together in this morning’s live briefing on Teams.

Today, we are focussing on vocabulary. We have six key words we are focussing on this week:

Science

Last week, you learnt what the fossil record has taught humans about the history of organisms that have existed on our planet. You also learnt what a geologist is and what they can tell us about the organisms that have lived during each geological era of time. In today’s lesson, you will look at how humans have changed over time and use the theory of evolution to explain these changes – learning how to make and use tools, shelter, fire and language has enabled humans to spread all over the world. You will start to look at the impact that humans have had on some species of plants and animals. You will need a piece of paper and a pencil for this lesson.

https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/what-impact-have-humans-had-on-plants-and-animals-65k38c

Task: there is a retrieval quiz at the beginning of this lesson, which recaps your learning from last week. Complete the table as you watch the lesson and then submit your answers via Teams or by email.
