Happy World Book day!

Hello everyone,

It is the last day of home learning before we return to school on Monday!

We know World Book Day was yesterday but at Prince Rock we are celebrating today. Follow the PowerPoint to find a range of activities to complete throughout the day all about 'The Secret Sky Garden' by Linda Sarah and Fiona Lumbers.

There is also an assembly all about World Book Day and it includes some audio clips of recommendations from teachers across the school. You can find this on Teams.

Hello Y1, here is a timetable for this week.

It is really important that you complete the lessons each day and save to Teams or email a picture of your work to year1staff@princerock.co.uk so that we can look at your wonderful learning. You need to complete the work set for that day.

On Wednesdays this afternoon session will be at 12:30 ready for a no screens afternoon.

On Friday this week we will be setting some World Book Day activities for you to complete. There will be no live sessions on this day.

We know some of you may be feeling a little worried and that is ok. We will be here to support you with your home learning and answer any questions that you have.

Year 1 Activities- Thursday 4th March

Hello Year One,

Just a reminder that tomorrow (Friday 5th March) we will be completing a day of World Book Day activities. For this reason, there will be no live sessions and we will see you at school on Monday!

Today we will be doing two live sessions on Teams. You can join with video to say Hello to your friends but please don’t forget to turn your cameras off when we ask you to and start the recording. The morning session will start at 9:35 AM and the afternoon session will start at 1:15 PM. We look forward to seeing you all.

For each of the editable activities on Teams we have added text boxes for you to add your answers. Please remember to submit examples of your work to Teams or send it across to year1staff@princerock.co.uk .We look forward to seeing your work, it really is lovely to see how you’re getting on at home.

English

This term we have a brand new author of the term and his name is David McKee. He has written some very famous stories, his most famous is Elmer!

Whole Class Reading

In Whole Class reading this week we are looking at a non- fiction text called ‘Tiger Cubs’ so we can find out some more about tigers to link to our ‘Anansi and the Tiger’ writing unit. Remember a non-fiction text is a factual text. Follow the PowerPoint to use the vocabulary you have seen in the text and then use your inference skills to answer some questions. Remember inference means to use what you already know and information from the text to think further about what the text is telling you.

Writing:

For our writing units we are following the Oak Academy Trust. Follow this link to find our fourth home learning unit. For this unit we are going to choose the most important lessons so we can finish the unit before we return to school. This means on some days we might jump to a different lesson number slightly further ahead. Today there are two video to watch and then one activity to complete.

Video 1- https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/to-write-clear-action-part-2-71gkat

Video 2- https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/to-write-clear-action-part-3-6xj34c

Today is lesson 5 but we are completing the days 8 and 9 activities ‘To write clear action (parts 2 and 3)’. Remember to follow the video very carefully as the teacher will help you complete the lesson.

The unit is called Anansi and Tiger

Spellings:

Practise writing this weeks spellings. They are: too, asked, my, full, said, was

Maths

  • Our next maths unit is all about length and height.
  • Today’s lesson is about measuring lengths. There are two videos today. The first  video is short and includes a quick activity in the video and the second video links to our written activity.

Follow this link to watch today’s first lesson on using a ruler (don’t worry if you do not have a ruler at home we will be practising this when we return to school too): https://vimeo.com/510394004

Follow this link to watch today’s second (and main) lesson on measuring lengths (2):

https://vimeo.com/510394371

Then complete the activity on the maths PowerPoint. We have added texts boxes so you can add your answers or you can complete this on paper and send us a photo. Remember to use your maths skills to help you.

  • Don’t forget we also have access to Numbots! Go on to your Numbots game webpage and work your way through the tasks. This will really help develop your Maths skills. Earn coins to spend decorating your robots! We can’t wait to see all of them.  https://play.numbots.com/#/intro
  • An optional extra activity today is to think about ordering numbers from smallest to greatest. Remember to look at the tens column first. Which number has the smallest ten? If there are numbers with the same ten you need to look at the ones.

For example:  28 and 23 both have 2 in the tens, I then look at the ones and notice that 3 is smaller than 8. I will order these numbers as 23, 28

Phonics

  • In our morning live Teams sessions we will be recapping our phonics sounds and reminding ourselves of Fred talk out loud, Fred in your head and sounding out to blend. Then we have a reading activity for you to complete. Maybe you could try the optional challenge to write some sentences using our sound of the day today.
  • Have a go at these online phonics games: https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/resources

Phonics Play have made all of their resources free whilst we are off school.

Follow the PowerPoint to find out some information about her and then try to think about how she might have been feeling when she went on her adventure. Next week we will be exploring more facts about her!

Computing

We are continuing to think about coding and algorithms. An algorithm is a set of instructions designed to perform a specific task. This can be a simple process, such as multiplying two numbers, or a complex operation, such as playing a compressed video file. In computer programming, algorithms are often created as functions and step by step instructions.

As this is our last computing activity whilst we are at home we thought it would be nice if you chose your own activity from the Hour of Code website. Remember if you choose one that is a little tricky you can just go back and try a different one. Here is the link to the Hour of Code website: https://hourofcode.com/uk/learn

In RE this week we are continuing to think about the religion of Judaism. Follow the PowerPoint to find out about The Sukkot and how they are used in the religion of Judaism. Then we are going to be thinking about things we need to survive and things we are greatful for.

Then complete the activity on the maths PowerPoint. We have added texts boxes so you can add your answers or you can complete this on paper and send us a photo.

History

Our next history unit is all about famous explorers. Before we learn about some very important people we would like you to have a go at researching for yourself. Can you use the internet or maybe questions to your adults to find out all about a famous explorer of your choice? Then make a poster all about them. We hope some of you will share these posters with us this afternoon.
