My name is Karen and I am the Learning Mentor for Prince Rock Primary School. My role includes identifying barriers to learning in children. These could be things such as low self - esteem, poor confidence, troubles with friendships & social skills as well as emotional regulation. Some children find it so difficult to manage their emotions. I also support transitions to new classes within school or to Y7.
Sometimes I make reward or behaviour charts which children can take to class to support their learning in class. This motivates them to do well.
A learning Mentor's aim is to boost children's happiness and to support the child's learning in class. I work one to one with children and give them time, nurture, and encouragement so they can transfer these skills back in class. This then will lead to an improved attitude to learning so school & home can see better progress.
I will help a child to complete any unfinished learning as well as practising a skill they need to improve on. I liaise with class teachers so that we are always up to date with what is needed to enable the child to move forwards. Sometimes, this is a step-by-step approach & sometimes it is a more rapid journey.
Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my friends and family. My interests include going to the cinema and theatre. I am also passionate about reading in my spare time.
