Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural Education at Prince Rock Primary School
SMSC encompasses all areas designed to promote children’s social, moral, spiritual and cultural development. It gives children the knowledge, skills and understanding that they need to stay healthy and safe and develop worthwhile relationships, respect differences, develop independence and responsibility and make the most of their own abilities and those of others. It is very closely linked with Every Child Matters (2004) and encompasses our work with citizenship, SEAL, R-Time, Healthy Schools Status and Building Learning Power.
SMSC is central to the educational entitlement of all children at Prince Rock Primary School and permeates all aspects of life in school. It is an integral part of the whole curriculum and is taught both as a discrete subject and through links with cross curricular themes.
The way the curriculum is managed, its organisation and the varying teaching styles used are central to the school’s philosophy and ethos, its aims, attitudes and values. The cross-curricular dimension to the learning at Prince Rock is through whole school topics. These are:
Rules, Myself, Relationships, My World, People and Choice.
Prince Rock Primary School provides opportunities for parents, the community and outside agencies to contribute to the social and moral development of its children through their active involvement in the life and philosophy of the school.
